What your learner will practice
Preparing for middle-school math. Fifth graders strengthen work with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages and mathematical expressions.
With order of operations in Grade 5, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve order of operations problems
- 1Solve parentheses first.
- 2Do multiplication or division before addition or subtraction.
- 3Work left to right within the same operation level and check.
Addition does not come before multiplication simply because it appears first.
Try these six examples
Read each question, solve on paper, and then check the answer. The full printable sets below provide 20 new problems each.
- 7 + 9 x 16 = ______ Answer: 151
- 10 + 3 x 11 = ______ Answer: 43
- 2 + 4 x 3 = ______ Answer: 14
- 10 + 3 x 6 = ______ Answer: 28
- 9 + 3 x 8 = ______ Answer: 33
- 11 + 2 x 14 = ______ Answer: 39
Helpful teaching idea
Color-code the operations before solving.
Invite students to estimate, solve, and explain whether the result is reasonable before showing the answer key.
