What your learner will practice
Preparing for middle-school math. Fifth graders strengthen work with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages and mathematical expressions.
With fractions in Grade 5, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve fractions problems
- 1Find the denominator: it tells how many equal parts form a whole.
- 2Find the numerator: it tells how many parts are counted.
- 3For addition, use a common denominator before combining numerators.
Only add numerators when the parts have the same denominator.
Try these six examples
Read each question, solve on paper, and then check the answer. The full printable sets below provide 20 new problems each.
- 3/5 + 4/15 = ______ Answer: 13/15
- 3/4 + 2/8 = ______ Answer: 1/1
- 2/3 + 1/9 = ______ Answer: 7/9
- 1/4 + 2/12 = ______ Answer: 5/12
- 2/10 + 8/20 = ______ Answer: 3/5
- 1/2 + 1/4 = ______ Answer: 3/4
Helpful teaching idea
Draw fraction strips or fold paper to make equal parts.
Invite students to estimate, solve, and explain whether the result is reasonable before showing the answer key.
