What your learner will practice
Multi-step thinking. Fourth graders practice larger numbers, fractions, decimals and multi-step reasoning. Encourage estimation as a way to check answers.
With division in Grade 4, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve division problems
- 1Find the total, the number of groups, and the missing amount.
- 2Use a related multiplication fact or draw equal groups.
- 3Multiply the quotient by the divisor to check.
Check that every group has the same amount.

Helpful teaching idea
Ask: Are we finding the number of groups or how many items are in each group?
Ask for a strategy before computation. Show how to check a result with the reverse operation.
