What your learner will practice
Multiplication and clear reasoning. Third graders begin to use multiplication, division, fractions and measurement regularly. Discuss which operation fits the question.
With multiplication in Grade 3, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve multiplication problems
- 1Rewrite a multiplication fact as equal groups or repeated addition.
- 2Use familiar facts, arrays, and the distributive property to break harder products apart.
- 3Estimate the product, then check using a related multiplication fact.
Do not add factors when the problem asks for equal groups.
