What your learner will practice
Multiplication and clear reasoning. Third graders begin to use multiplication, division, fractions and measurement regularly. Discuss which operation fits the question.
With area & perimeter in Grade 3, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve area & perimeter problems
- 1Label length and width clearly.
- 2Multiply length by width for a rectangle’s area.
- 3Add all four sides, or calculate 2 × (length + width), for perimeter.
Area uses square units; perimeter uses linear units.

- Rectangle: 5 by 6 units. Find PERIMETER. Answer: 22 units
Helpful teaching idea
Trace the edge of a book for perimeter and cover its surface with squares for area.
Practice a few facts daily, and return to tricky questions after a short break.
