What your learner will practice
Counting and number sense. First graders use drawings, objects, and number lines to understand small numbers and explain their thinking. Focus on accuracy before speed.
With place value in Grade 1, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve place value problems
- 1Read the whole number from left to right.
- 2Identify the digit and its position: ones, tens, hundreds, or higher.
- 3Multiply the digit by the value of its place.
A digit and the value of that digit are not always the same.

Helpful teaching idea
Use a place-value chart and highlight the target digit.
Use blocks or fingers first. Ask the learner to tell you how they know the answer, not simply to guess.
